WHAT IS THE MIDDLEBURG KENNEL CLUB?

We were started about 28 years ago by a group of friends who for many years held their meetings in Middleburg's Coach Stop Restaurant. This self-proclaimed 'marching and chowder society' decided to form an all-breed dog club and to seek AKC recognition.

This decision initiated the long process of earning AKC licensing, which was granted in 1983 as we put on our first all-breed dog show. The initial entry was 1060 dogs. Fittingly, the Best In Show winner for Middleburg's first show was an English Foxhound.

In 1996 the club began holding back-to-back, Friday/Saturday shows. Our shows average over 2000 entered dogs. The Middleburg Kennel Club shows were recognized five years ago in the AKC Gazette to be among the top 10 classic dog shows in the country. In 2005 we moved the shows to a Saturday/Sunday format, thus enabling obedience both days.

In 2001 the club was elected to be an AKC member club by the member dog clubs that make up the American Kennel Club.

WHAT ABOUT MEMBERSHIP?

If you are interested in membership in the Middleburg Kennel Club, please contact our secretary for more information about the application process.e-mail

We have companionship and a great deal of experience to share, with an interesting mix of members who are relatively new to dogs and a core of  'old hands'. As with any all-breed club, some of our members tend to have had many years in dogs, with successful breeding programs and multi-dog club activities. Many are also members of their national and local breed specialty clubs and have held key positions in breed and obedience clubs. A few are even delegates to the American Kennel Club, representing their national breed clubs. All turn out to help put on our events.

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH INFORMATION ABOUT SPECIFIC BREEDS?

Yes. We have experience with many breeds and in-depth knowledge of those we currently have in our kennels. Here is a table of the breeds who are part of our members' families, and their kennels' names. Underscored kennels have a web site and, where appropriate, we have also provided an e-mail address or phone number for more information about that particular breed. Additionally, we have provided links to local and national breed club sites. Just click on the underlined names to go there.
